Set in an undergrou nd dungeo n inhabited by bundled, ragged human beings, after the nuclear holocaust. The st ory follows the w anderings of a hero throug h the s ituations o f su rvival. People wait for the Ark to arrive and rescue them while their habitat falls a part. Delv ing deep into the du sty and long aba ndonde d vaults of b-cinema in search of lost gems always leaves me w ith a bittersweet taste. On one hand the disc overy of unexpec ted gems where no one would think th em possible is a rewarding experience. On the other hand th ough it makes one wonder how many of these remarkable lo w-budget odditie s, personal love aff airs of directors ne ver quite famous and now all but forgotten, h ave almost f orever slipped from memory n an y case what we have here is a litt le po st-apocalyptic gem from Poland that is reall y better than it has any right to. The dystopian near futu re of O-BI, O-BA finds a group of s urvivors of the nuclear war that r avage d the Ea rth inhabiti ng an unde rworld concrete bunker and bidin g their time as they wait for the myste rious Ark, an air ship of some kin d that wil l come and sa ve them. The A rk proves to be an e labora te ho ax, carefu lly designed to give h ope to the malnourished and d esperate denizens o f the bu nker, while in the me antime the dome that sepa rates their miserable existen ce from the nuclear winter outside is slowly caving in. Wha t first striked me about the movie is t he design of the bunke r and the depiction of the survivors. Th e survivors are gau nt, filth y and terrible-look ing penitents, dressed in rags and a imlessly wandering the neon-lit halls of the bunker like automatons. The bu nker is a rundown, s eedy place, with bright neon light s peering f rom all sides like the eyes of malignant beasts. On one hand it is a sl ightly 80's depiction o f th e dystopi an future but the movie ne ver stoops down t o MAD MAX che ese. Instead it c ombine s biting political satire with the bl eak outlook of a world with no future, black c omedy with barbs on apathy, religion and power. The survivors, for example , ar e fe d some kind of flour dropping from a tube that hovers in th e air - later on we d iscover the food supervisor uses books and the Bible i tself as filler for this meagre meal. There are many s uch short symbolic touches , perhap s not life-changing or faith-restoring, yet playful, clever and inspired . One thing is for sure; O- BI, O-BA is not your run-of -the-mi ll s ci-fi sc hlock. It overcomes it s modest budget w ith creativity and has g enuine ar tistic aspirations both from a w riting and directing perspective. My opinion is that it should have been filmed in bl ack and white instead o f col our though. The director uses atmospheric light and shadow to g reat effe ct an d it would have regist ered even better in s tark b lack and white. The blue-g reen n eon on th e other hand outs tays its welcome after a while. Just a minor gripe in an oth erwise solid b-movie with its heart set in al l th e ri ght places.
