Eric Br aede n stars as Dr. Charles Forbin, who ha s creat ed a superco mput er named Colossus, built s olely for the purpose of con troll ing the nuclear defenses of the Wes tern alliance. It is n't too long after , ho wever, that the R ussia ns annou nce that they too h ave built a similar computer for those same purposes on their side--Guard ian. And when the two m achines begin sha ring infor mation at a speed nob ody c an believe, an attempt is made to disable them. This unfortunately just ra ises the machi nes' ire; and in retaliatio n, they launch thei r weapons at each oth er's home nations . The result is a chilling scena rio that is po tential ly becoming all t oo r eal these days. COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT was not a big hit at the bo x office for vario us reasons. One is that i ts cast w asn' t exactly well known. Another reason is t hat its en ding isn't e xactly a happy one. Sti ll a th ird reaso n is that U niversal had trouble trying to p romote it in the wake of the hu ge success of Stanle y Kubrick's 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. The latt er reason is obvious Colossu s an d Guardian, like HAL in the Kub rick movie, become central characters here. The diff erence here is that while HAL malfunctions due to a programm ing conflict, Colossus and Guardian r emain all too stable, con vinced beyond a doubt that they know how to protect Mankind better than Man h imself. As the com puters point out One inevitable ru le is that Mankind is his own worst enemy. Jose ph Sargent's direction is ef ficient, a nd the special effects work of Albert Whitlock still manages to work despite its obvi ous age. A n ove rloo ked gem in the sci-fi genre, this should be given a revival.
