Fernando Di Leo's Milano Calib ro 9 is an o ut-and- out masterpiece of Italian Crime cinem a and, in m y opinion, one of t he most a stonishing c rime st ories ever told . The fir st film in Di Leo's excell ent 'Mi lieu' trilogy, Mil ano Calibro 9 was followed b y La Mala Ordina (aka. Man hunt, also 1972) and the brilliant Il Boss (1973). The three films are not connect ed stor y-wise, but all three are excellent, and hi ghly realis tic por trayals of organized crime. As fa r as I am concerned Manhu nt is (allthough excellent) sligh tly inferior to this o ne and Il Boss w hich both st and out as absolute all-ti me highlights of crime cinema. Milano Cal ibro 9 is the best of them all, a film that is astonish ing in all aspects, be it the in genious plot that, apart f rom a compelling stor y and cle ver twi sts, inclu des soc ial criticism, t he performa nces, the gritty atmosphere and suspense or the brilliant scor e. I ca n hardly find the rig ht words to expre ss my admiration for th is masterpiece whi ch easily ra nks among the greatest Gangster flicks ever brought to sc reen. Gastone Moschin stars as Ugo Piazza, a tough an d elliptical ex-convict who has just been rele ased from prison. I mmediat ely after his release, Ugo is approached by mem bers of the Milan mob le ad by the irascible gangster Rocc o (Mario Adorf) , as they s uspect him to be responsible for the dis appearan ce of a large sum of mo ney belonging t o the ir boss, an American (Lionel Stander) who cont rols the organized cri me in Milan... Milano Calibr o 9 is a fil m that delivers an astonishingl y realistic mood of the underworld lik e hardly another. The intriguing storyline goes in hand wi th interesting ch aracters, r aw atmosphere, suspe nse and breathtaking action, social criticism and bru tal violence. The f ilm is simply stunn ing from the beginning to t he end, which is eve n intensified by the brilliant score, a collaboration of the famous composer Luis Enríqu ez Bacalo v and the Italian Progres sive Rock band Osanna. Ugo Piazza mu st be one of the most charismatic gangster characters ever in cinema, and Gastone Mos chin was the pref ect choice for the role. Moschin delivers a brilli ant performance, and the rest o f the cast is also great. Ma rio Adorf i s irascibl e like a r abid dog as the ferocious gangster Rocco, a role that fits him like a g love. The grea t Lionel Stande r fits perf ectly in his role of the American Mafia Don. The tw o cop characters in the film a re pl ayed by two of the gr eatest regul ars of Italian genre-cinem a, Luigi Pistilli and Fr ank Wolff (wh o committed suici de b efore the film was released). The ravis hing Barbara Bouchet is astonis hing and inc redibly sexy in the role o f Ugo Piazza's stripper girlfriend. Bouchet is both a stunning be auty and an excellent actress and thi s is doubtlessly one of he r most memorabl e roles. This i s also a political film and direct or Di Leo embedd ed a lot of social criticism about topi cs like corruption. This film simply has everything one can po ssibly desire in cinema. Films like Milano Calibro 9 are the reas on why I love cinema. This is an absolute masterpiece in all regards and, without exaggeration, one of the greate st Crime fli cks ever made! The inge nious opening scen e alone is more me morab le than most films get in two hours.
