This 1992 Jap anese film tells the story of a scientist who sets out to c reate the new su per Ada m and Eve, humans who cannot be controll ed by thei r emotions. Of course, the end re sult it not exactly wha t the good d octor expects. comments fro m imdb Thi s modern tale of an attempt to build a creat ure is one o f the best horror fi lms eve r made, even if it s not a horror film but something el se entirely . Certai nly its on my short list of all time great films. This fil m was introduced to me by someone who told me I have this film th at probably one of the best film s you'll ever see. It wi ll move you and t ouch you an d make you think, but if I t old you what it is and t old you how its d one you w ill think it s the stupidest thi ng on the face of it an d you won't watch it. Intr igued I asked what did he mean, and he sa id, Well i ts a F rankenstei n story, with a very goofy s ort of edge, but whi ch uses it to its advanta ge. My ears perked up, and I being a trustin g soul took t he tape and wa tched it. I was blown awa y. The plot concerns a m ad scientist attem pting to make a new Adam and Eve in the wake of a suic idal plagu e that is ravaging the world. Locked up in his lab his experi ments go differently t hen either he or we expect. Some o f it is sil ly (The bolts in the neck, the wrestl ing moves...), all of it is touchin g and thought pr ovoking. I can n ot recommend this movie eno ugh. If you are willing to take the film on its terms and allow it to te ll its story then I ur ge you to seek this film out and see it. This is an un discovered gem that will stay wit h you fo rever. 15 o ut o f 10 a nd then some. 101 0 Also know n as The Las t Frankenstein, this is an extraordin ary, imp eccably produced ho rror film. Director Takeshi Kawamu ra us es Mary Shelley's novel as a mere launching pad f or an expl oration o f subje cts as dive rse and fas cinating as the natu re of lov e, desire, suicide, mass hypnos is, sex, alienatio n and jealousy. And though th e film is dense with subtext, it is also stunn ingly photographe d and rich i n atmos phere and detail. The p erformances are all amazing and Kawa mura's sensiti ve handling of the strange, delicate relationships between the characters res ults in an emotionally charged, angst-ridden tragedy. The scenes of the confused, tro ubled m onster hurt ling through a fog-shrouded fores t at night are mem orable and striking, as is a brilliant home m ovie-style montage of the film's more curious characters enjo ying a preci ous afternoon at th e beach. Kawamu ra creates resonating visual poetry o f ho rror and sadnes s bare ly sig hted since Todd Bro wning 's cla ssic Fr eaks. Inte lligent, emo tional, tragic and real, this is an abs olute gem. 910
