Based on one of the major literary texts survived from the Middle Kingdom, the classical pe riod of Egyptian literature, Th e Elo quent Pe asant is a combina tion of a moralityfolk tale and a poem. The events are set between 2160 and 2 025 B C. When the peasant Kh un-anup and his donkey stumble upon the lands of the noble Rensi, the peasant’s goods are confisca ted and he’s u njustl y accused of theft. T he p easant petitions Rensi w ho is so taken by th e peasa nt’s eloquence that he report his astoni shing dis covery to th e king. The king realises the peasa nt has been wronged but delays judge ment so as to he can h ear more of his eloq uence. The peasant makes a total of nine petitions unti l finally, his goods are returne d.
