Jere my cla ims that he has found a male equivalent version of Fifty Shades of Grey , pre senting a kid's book about tractors . The new Chevrolet Stingray is announce d. James May turne d fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team composed of wa r ampute es (previously mentioned in series 17, ep isode 6) finally comp leted t heir challenge of fini shin g the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review James revie ws the new Bentley Con tinen tal GT, an d notes the new engine and subtle ride characteristics. Bel ieving t hat the Bentley, with four wh eel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle t hings worse than a Welsh countryside road, James take s the car on to a Welsh stage of t he World Rally Champion ship, with K ris Meeke behind t he wheel, and James being the co-driv er. Despite the car havin g less grip, m ore weight, an electronic handb rake (unsuitable f or usage on a ra lly stage) and James not being proficient at giving pace note s, the Bentley was actually faster than one of the fu ll WRC cars. Star In A Reasonably Priced C ar Dam ian Lewis takes his tu rn in the car, and dri fts the Kia Cee'd around the snow-co ated test trac k and crosse s the finish line side ways, setting the slowest ever time of 209.1. Jeremy cheers Damian up b y making a separate boa rd for snow (he justs pu t the time underneath and to the side of the f astest lap time on tha t board) a nd says that he is the fastest driver ever on their snow board. Challenge Jeremy attem pts t o build a car smal ler than the Peel P5 0, naming his cre ation the P 45. It was based on a quad bike, w ith bodywork fitted, desi gned to wrap arou nd the driver. He then presented his idea to the 'Dragons ' in a Drago ns' Den style format. All of the dragons declare themselves out and back in the studi o, Richard concludes that for the P45 to b e put in p rodu ction, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149Series 1 9, Episode 23 Fe bruary 20 13Mick Fleetwood Challen ge, Part 1 In anothe r chal lenge, the presenters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Since it w as Hammond's turn to select the challenge location, the tea m went to the We stern Uni ted States . Jer emy s elected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Vi per. After a brief drive in the Nevada desert , the trio headed to La s Vegas Motor Speedwa y, sp ecifically the drag stri p, to compete in drag races orga nized by the Las Vegas Polic e Department; whom organized it wi th the theory th at allowing pe ople to drag race, legally, a t a closed circuit, would preven t street racing. D espi te the high p erformance of their cars, the trio were beaten by mod ified production cars, and 4WD cars, i n each of t heir drag races. New s Jerem y com es up with a sol ution on how to solve the crisis affe cting Britain's town cent res sacking all traffic wardens and removing dou ble yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product designed to sto p dro wsine ss behind the wheel, before the y took a first look at the 2013 Jagu ar F-Ty pe. They praised its stylin g, but criticize d its high price tag of £60,000, as well as its target audience. James mentions Peugeot Citroen's c ar intended to run on compressed air; Jeremy att empted to use a fire ext inguisher to demonstrate, but fa iled after only causing hims elf to tu rn slowly a round. Challe nge, Part 2. Aft er leavi ng Las Vegas, James and R ichard make fun of J eremy's LFA for lac king not only Bluetooth connec tion and iPod conne ctors, but cup holders, desp ite being the most expensive car. They are then tasked to hea d to Wil low Springs International Mot orsports Park, but t hey inste ad stop on a grooved road, whe re e ach ca r driv es over the groove s an d produces notes. When they re ach W illow Springs, they are fo rced to play an aeria l version of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst bei ng chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed with las er guns. In the end, James won the chall enge b y being hit only 1 7 times. Star in a Reasonably Pr iced C ar Fleetwo od Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd arou nd the Test Track with a lap of 145.4. C hallenge, P art 3 Departing Will ow Springs, the group headed for Los Ange les, Califor nia. In order to do real world testi ng, Richar d dev ised a challenge to see who cou ld burn t he best elevens . The three instead e nded up drawing a p hallus an d left LA. The team t hen stayed for a night in Palm Spring s. However, the producers gave the m a final challe nge. The three would dri ve from Pa lm Sp rings t o the Mexic an border at Calexico the following morning, an d the las t to make it to the Mexica n border would h ave to travel into the country itself to drive the M astretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the prese nters in an earlier series, for a l ater segm ent on the show. In revenge f or taking the m to America, Jer emy and James sabotage d Hammond's Viper, cau sing hi m to lose 10 minutes in th e race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jere my made it t o the fini sh line first, with James in second. Richard then walked to the border being the last person to arriv e. At the studio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazin g. 150 Seri es 19, Episode 310 February 2013 Amy Macdonald R eview Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Su baru B RZ. The cars are almost identical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyo ta GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1313. News T hey discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about th e new Masera ti Q uattroporte. Ch allenge, Part 1 The producers have res erved a single tick et to a footb all match at t he San Siro in Mi lan, Northe rn Italy. The tri o have a race from Wembley St adium to t he San Sir o. Jeremy drives the Shelby Mu stang GT500 and Ri chard and James travel on public transport. Similar to the previou s rac e to Monte Carlo, Richard and Jame s are not allo wed to use a ny cars, a nd Jerem y is not all owed to use any trai ns. According to Jeremy, si nce the last epic race, the trains have become f aster and boats have become slower. Ric hard and James opened up a big lead wh ilst trav elling on the Eurostar , and arrive in Par is wh ile Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After re achi ng Fran ce, Jeremy discov ers th at the Mus tang only h olds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Af ter leaving Paris, Richard and J ames discu ss w hat to do u pon arriving in M ilan — as there are t wo of them but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles b ehind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge stat ing out loud, I'm gonna lose ! St ar in a Reaso nably Priced Ca r Amy M acdona ld drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test T rack in 144.4. D uring one of her prac tice runs, Amy accidentally destro yed one o f the runw ay lights, whic h Jeremy gives to her af ter revealing t he lap time. Ch allenge, Part 2 The hi gh speed TGV slowed down as it approache d the mountains that surro und Northe rn Italy. J eremy began to catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until roa d works at the Mont Blanc Tunne l slow him down. The t rain sta rts to accelerate again and rea ches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. R ichard and James use a t ube network t o get to the streets near the finish line. Ja mes main tains his opp osition to run on television and R ichard runs off alone to find t he finish li ne, whic h is at a bar in the I M Villa Veuv e Cliequot. Jam es then assembled a bike which he ha d hidden in one of his bags and rides to th e bar, onl y to fin d that Ric hard is already there and h as won the r ace and the ticket to the football m atch. Moments later, Jeremy arriv ed and accepted defea t for the fir st time ever in an epic race o f all the series. 151Se ries 19, Episode 417 February 2013L ewis Hamilto n Review Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST an d Renault M egane Renaul t Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of eac h ca r, th e Fo cus being the slowest at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 128 .3, and the Megane in 127.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the best overall car of the three. News They discuss the newes t car s, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustang would b e sold in Great Britain, but the UK ve rsion wo uld come with a 2.0 EcoBoost e ngine, and t he impo rtance of the handb rake turn in male development. Revi ew Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee 'd, putting it through a myriad of strange ro ad tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doi ng a lap wi th both the old and new Cee'd , Bruce Willis (in character as John McClane) testing the horn of the Cee'd, Eric Clapton testing it s auxilia ry i nput jack, and Jeremy t esting the Cee'd's self parallel parking feature . S tar in a Reasonably Priced C ar L ewis H amilton opens up a bout his move from McLaren to Mercedes AMG and takes the old Suzuki Liana around the Test Track, sett ing th e fastest F1 time, a 142.9. R eview As pun ishment f or losing the previous race, Richard is for ced to rev iew the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that t he MXT was a n ambitious undertaking fo r the first-tim e ma nufac turer, bu t that it had it s share of flaws. Jer emy demonst rates the c omplexity o f modern car s' dshboard. Rich ard brings a Fiat Multipl a and bo th mo dify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and re place s it consid ering it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying that it is dangerous for the elderly who are as de licate as children, and that he nee ds it for a safety feature. Jer emy makes a speedometer which reads 20 mph at the top speed, he a lso uses an old de sign switch for re ar fog light which does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. T hey pain t it in b eige after observing the shade of a hearing aid. Ri chard uses water-res istant fab ric as seat covers, an d while stitching hurts his eye. They com plete the c ar and end t he part 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over hi s left eye. News Volkswagen wil l launch GTI ve rsion of the new G olf and GT version o f Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. T he Mi ni Pacem an is lau nche d, and the trio mock the front e nd of the c ar, claim ing that it looks depres sing. The trio agree that the Briti sh are the best drive rs. Alfa-Romeo r eleases phot ographs of the Gl oria, in which the trio make fun of it's name. Ric hard had arriv ed late so James and Jeremy had a ttempted to play tennis with cars (whic h ha s a lot o f edit ing). Review James reviews the n ew Range Ro ver in London. The new car is complete ly redesigne d, 40 0 kg light er due t o Aluminium body, has active suspension, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offers bette r comfort. Ja mes then rac es it against Ter raMax at N evada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain , hillock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to dr one mode d uring the r ace to deflate the t yres and take a s hort-cut. Th e Range Rover's automatic Te rrain Response System is demon stra ted. James take s a longer route to ascend th e hill but still wins the race. At th e studio, the trio cons ider t he driverless cars to be not very practi cal. He dr ove over grassy pa tch in t he last corner but man ages to keep the c ar under control. Challen ge, Part 2 J eremy and Richard road-test the ir car at Chri stchurch, Do rset. Th e car has large front bump ers mad e up of fo am, large rear-view mirror s, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal, larg e ma gnifying-gl ass on the dashb oard, sat n av (voiced b y Ric hard Briers) with only four destinatons. The car has an ar tificial cat on the roof w hich later fell ove r on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later show s his system to find the location of parked car ( the car activates a flare and t hen releases a ba lloon ). Jeremy shows that the ra dio only plays Horse of the Year Sho w theme on a loop, which both lat er find to be irresist ible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The Jame s. They pick up three elderl y ladies fro m a pensioners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bowl ing clu b where it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the re ar for parking assist which inflates the airbag on close proxim ity. Jeremy and Ric hard b uy food for pic nic, choosin g only Brit ish foods. They attach the shopp ing trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The ro of of th e car leaks as i t rains . Jerem y and Richard end up choosing a picni c spot on roadside wher e they find the trolley to be d amaged durin g reversing and the food to be so aked, h oweve r they a te the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurch a nd Jeremy shows his system to prevent the car from bei ng driven on the wrong side of the ro ad, t he car initially sou nds ala rm and later the tyres, doors and ot her parts of the car explode which stops the car and renders it immobile. At the studio, James c onsiders the heater t o be complicated, the t rio thank Richar d Briers and announce the Africa spec ial. 153Series 19, Ep isode 6 3 March 20 13No Guest First of the two-episod e Africa Spe cial, taking place in Afric a. The ep isode was shot in 2012. Cha llenge, Part 1 Buy used estate cars for up to £1,500 in Br itain and report at a smal l vi llage in rural Ugand a. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring , Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and J ames in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The chall enge is to find the true source of the river Ni le. They set off an dis cover that explorin g isn't as difficult as first thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lak e Victoria, of w hom the Victorian Explo rers thought was t he so urce of the Nil e. However they ar e then told that it is not t he actual so urce of the Nil e and there we re two other disputed locations for it, one in Rwanda and o ne in Burundi. However, Jeremy Clar kson insi sted that both of t hese locations were wrong and de cided to head west towards Lake Ed ward to see whether ther e was a link between that la ke a nd Lake Kivu in Rw anda. In their journey w est, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and from there s ee the Ford Scorpi o Estate b ack-up car. They continue into Kampala, Uganda' s Capital City where they get held up in a traffic j am overnight, the most hurrendous tra ffic they'd ever seen. They continue on well-main tained highways west find ing their tr ip incredibly easy be fore reaching the town of Mbarar a in the s outhwest of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi Distric t. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea pl antations in an att empt to discover a lovely teahouse hotel, wh ich in the mind of R ichard, was bound to f ound due to tea p rogramme s he'd seen. In Mbara ra they stayed in the Economic Lodge wi th Jeremy havin g a bed with faece s on it. They left the hotel disgusted befor e Ric hard has the idea to make the cars 'hotels'. James modifies his Vo lvo by addin g a library, Richard ad ds a cooker and Jerem y adds a cof fin. The coffin he uses to put his cl othes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotto n. They leave for Lak e Edward, ca mping overnight there because of its beauty b efore h eading in search of the river head ing for Lake K ivu. None of the rivers connect the lake a s they all head east rather than south. They give u p, leaving them dis appointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of th e Nile must be o n the other side of Lake Victor ia. H is r eason ing is that t he Medite rranean Sea is effectiv ely an inlan d sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After d iscoveri ng this they decide tha t they must drive straig ht to th e other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast c oast in T anzania near the Serengeti. They st art this journey by heading south into the Rwenzori Mou ntains, finding the going hard and most of the time getti ng their vehicles stuck in mud.
