The main character is Dr. M ax Holst, a successful ne urosurgeon. One day an int ense little man named Steinmet z shows up, who has t he rea l abili ty to create object s out of t hin air, using only his mind. As no one beli eves him at first , he is he ld at a ward for mental patient s, but man ifests the key to his door and escapes. As he has a special interest in Dr. Holst, Stein metz sub sequently invites Holst to his lar ge ma nsion, which is full of exp ensive paintings and sculpt ures, an d proves t o him that h e can in fact mate rialise objects. Steinmet z’s abilities are evolving by leaps and bounds, and is progr essing from being able to create objects only to being ab le to create livi ng things. His u ltimate ambition is to be a ble to create a human being. He tells Dr. Hols t that if he will only pe rform a cert ain brain operatio n on him, Steinmetz will bec ome able to attain his goal. He’s got all the necessary equ ipment set up in his b asement. Dr. Hols t, h owever, is too s pooked b y the w hole thing to agree to thi s mad scheme, and refu ses. Ste inmetz then sets about manipul ating Holst’s life, to pressure him into perfor ming the operation. By then Steinmetz has become able to cre ate a temporary human being, and in the hope that he can perhaps mak e his own c reation perform the operation, he ma nifests a doppelganger o f Dr. Holst. This double p roceeds to take over Dr. Holst’s li fe, creating chaos for him professiona lly and pers onally. And the n Dr. Holst starts figh ting back. The ending has the du al virtue of b eing both unexpected a nd satis fying.
