Former police detective Adr ian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), whose photographic memory and amazing abi lity to piece together tiny clues made him a local legen d, has suff ered from intensified obses sive-compu lsive disorde r and a variety of pho bias since the u nsolved murder of his wif e, Trudy, in 1997. Now on p sychiatric leave from the San Franc isco Police Dep artment and worki ng as a f reelance detective con sultant on difficult cases, Monk ho pes to convince his former boss, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), to allow him to return to the force. Stottlemeyer , who wave red betw een admirati on for Mo nk and annoyanc e at his eccentricities during the first seaso n, is becoming more of a friend to Monk as t he series develops, frequently calling him in to help , as much for Monk's b enef it as for his own. However, he knows Mo nk's li mitations as well as his str engths and may stil l harbor doubts abo ut the wisdom of all owing Monk to carry a g un or subdue a per petrator. Stottleme yer's second -in-command, Lie utena nt Randall Disher (Jason G ray-Stanford), also seems to be de veloping bo th admirati on and compassi on for the man he once labe led the defective detective.D espite flaws and in adequacies all around, the three ar e becoming an incre asingl y effective team, with additional hel p fr om Monk's personal assistant. Fro m the double -episode pi lot through the first ha lf of seaso n three, Mo nk was aided by hi s nurse, Sharo na Fleming (Bitty Sch ram). But in the tenth episode of the third seaso n, Sharona was replaced by a new assistant, N atalie Teeg er (Tray lor Howard). Like S harona, a divorcee with a son na med Benjy, Natalie is a single parent, a wid ow with a daughter named Julie (Emmy Clarke). Unlike Sharona, Natalie is no t a nurse but a former bar tender with a fresh perspective on Mr. Monk, as she st ill addresses her new boss.
