Marcel Carné is widely regarded as one of the standard bearers of French qual ity cinema of the 1930s and 1940s, responsible for such masterpieces as Quai d es brumes (1938) and Les E nfants du Paradis (1945). How ironic then that, in 1958, to wards the end of his film -making caree r, h e should ma ke a film which dared to p ortray the attitudes and be haviou r of the 1950s youth, in a way tha t effect ively capture s the mood and sentiment of t he time. Les Trich eurs was a hu gely cont rover sial f ilm, not l east because of its blatant de piction of ad olescent free- love, and was even banned in some regions of France. It also received some intensely unfavour able reviews, most notably from the youn g ho theads on the Cahiers du cinéma such as François Truffa ut who cited this film a s a p rime example of the decline of French cinema into medio crity. In spite of all this negative press, the fil m proved to be an aston ishing comm ercial su ccess, at tracting five mill ion cine ma-goers, and was awar ded the G rand Prix du Cinéma fra nçais in 1 958. Wh ilst Le s Tricheurs is not as flawl ess as Carné's earl ier masterpieces, it is none theless a significa nt wo rk, having the power to both shock and move its audie nce, whil st having great e nter tainment value. It evoke s the mood of its time in a way that few French films of th is period di d, depicting young people as pleasure-seeking rebel s, rejecting the austerity and disci pline of th e previous generation whilst p ursuing a life witho ut cares, r esponsib ilities o r love. Similarities with J ames Dean's films of the 1950 s (most notably Rebel witho ut a Cause ) are apparent, although Carné's t reatment of young people is far more abstrac t - in his film they merely sy mbolise a world that has l ost its w ay, m ore or l ess victi ms of post-w ar prosp erity . Although the young people i n Les Tricheurs lack the authenticity to be totally credible, the film does make an import ant, and indeed q uite distur bing point , abo ut where t he permissive society may be heading. Much of the pleasure of the film is in the performances from its four lead actors, J acques Ch arrier , Pascale Petit, Laurent Terzieff and Andréa P arisy , although only Te rzieff is really convin cing in his role. Marcel Carné ori ginally consid ered Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmo ndo for the parts of Bob an d Alain respectively, before opting for Charrier and Terzieff. As a co nsolation, Carné o ffered Be lmondo a smaller part in the fi lm - alas too small for the actor to be notic ed by the public. Belmondo's breakthrou gh had to wait u ntil the followin g year when he s tarred i n Je an-Luc Godard's revolutionary A bout de souffle, a film which offers a very differen t perspect ive of the yo uth generation.
