Based on an unknown Schönberg opera f rom 1929, From Today Until Tomorro w explores one nigh t in a not-quite lo veless marriage. A husband and wife return from a part y where she has flirted with ano ther man, while he has cast an ap praising eye toward an attra ctive , fashionably dressed acquaintance of his wif e’s. Though each dreams , briefly, of leav ing the marri age for the excitement and m ystery of a new lover, in the end they deci de stability and comfort are more important than the fleeting thrill of new romance . Directors Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, wh o previously collaborated on two o ther films about music (The Chronicle of Anna Magdal ena Bach, 1968, and M oses and Aaron, 1975 ), re ly on long fixed shots in a ustere black-and -white so that th e focus rema ins on the music al bril lian ce of Schönberg’s atona l score, performed here by 70 musicians. That Schönberg would choose such a relatively l ighthearted message for his newly discovered musical language re mains a mystery, especially since the concl usion rea ched by t he husband and wife —to stick with the trie d and true—seems directly at odds with Schönberg’s own philoso phy of composin g. I t is ju st thi s ju xtaposi tion, however, coupled with St raub and H uillet’s f aithful pr esen tation, that make s the opera a compelling addition to the Schönberg cano n—and the film such a chal lenging and intrigu ing experience.

“我是这么想的， 这香料呢，的 确是不能一直都有那么多的，而且我们家里也的确是 要有一点稳 定的进项，我想 着呢，要 么就这样吧，等气稍稍冷一点了呢，我们家去码头卖 这个骨头汤吧，这个骨头汤，好喝 便宜，成本不高，卖出去的价钱也合适，大家都乐意喝 上那么一碗，薄利多 销，每也算是有个 稳定的，收入 还不错的来源不是。”
“确实，我刚刚是答应了你要全部现金偿付。但是你也看到了，这部分的股票折合成现金，不是一个小数目，即便是百分之七十五，也足 够多了。除了我 之外，还有什么人能够一次性付这么多钱？再说了，我也能够提供担保，不是让你白白送给我。”
