It is a great film by a great director.Kira Muratova has nev er been given her due in the Sovi et and pos t-Soviet Ru ssia.In the Long Good B ye she depicts a seemingly banal story of a jealous a nd possessive mothe r (bril liantly acted by Zi naida Shar ko) and her poor al oof and lonely son ( the only cinemati c role by th e talented O. Vl adimirsky). The story - which i s noth ing extraordinary in itsel f - grows into the wonderful and frig htening analysis of alienat ion between genders and generations on the background of the ev en more frighteningly bleak and dehuma nized Soviet reality.Kira Muratova shows the tiny details of everyday Soviet lif e,an d, again , b anal as they ar e ,they are a hair-raising horror.The dialogue is de libera tely l aconic and void of any s ense, showin g th e ever-growing people's inability to communicate and understand each oth er.The sound track ( by another un der-estimated talent, Oleg Karav aichuk)adds to the atmosphere of hopeless and meaningless existence.Of course,Sasha (the name of the protag onist), will leave his despotic ( but loving!) moth er sooner or later, but where for (c)
