MOSS ROSE in 19 47 was the first film to be m ade from his novels, then in 1948 tw o of his w orks w ere adapted for the screen, this film and THE MARK OF CAIN. The m ovie stars Todd as a recentl y widowed missio nary returning to her home in England from Jamaica. During the voyage, sh e meets Millan d, a charmin g though dangerous rasca l wh o is wanted by police in connection with some unsavory dea lings. Milland contracts malaria while onboard the ship an d Todd nurses him back to health. In London, Todd settles into her home, taking in boarders to make e nds m eet. Milland arrives, moves i n, and pr oclaims his love for he r. Todd is thrilled, but it see ms r ather o bvious that Milland is only toying with her. Milland finds so me letters written to her by h er friend, Fitzgera ld, in which F itzger ald reveals som e of her sexual i ndiscretions. Since Fitzgerald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, M illand bel ieves he can use the letters to blackmai l Fitzgerald. Todd's lov e for Milland is so gr eat that she goe s along with the plan. Huntley, however, learns of t he scheme an d also unco vers detail s of Milland's s hady past. Fearing for her lover 's safety, Todd poisons Hun tley, the n re mains sile nt when Fitzgerald i s arrest ed for the murd er. Milland has by n ow g enuinely fallen in love with Todd and the two make plans to leave England. Before th ey can depart, o ne of Milland's for mer l overs shows up an d Todd, in a jealous rage, ki lls Milland, the n turns herself into the police. Th is is an int riguing film, although a little on the talky side. The performances are excellent throu ghout, with M illand shining as the c ad, the t ype of role in which he excelled. Though he spent most of his time maki ng films in the US, he occasionally returned to his native E ngland for a prod uction and this was his first Briti sh film since FRENCH WITHOUT TEARS in 1939. Directo r Allen was also an Englishman who chose to work in the US, this bein g his first director ial ef fort in his homeland. This was the fourth and last time Milland and Allen would work together, their pairing having begun in 1 944 with t he wonderful ly eerie THE UNINVITE D.
