Set in a small Quebec town in t he late-1920 ′s, this emotional dram a follows th e life and exploit s of Celeste Bea umont , a talented young pianist who gain s local celebr ity a t the town m ovie theater for her gifts as a silent film pianist. Aw kward Pi erre B laudell is her biggest fan and eventually marries her. Sh ortly afte r this she bear s his son, Pierre, who joins the army. She insists o n joinin g him at the base and his m eddles ome, snooty parents insist she give them h er son. Pi erre is killed in the wa r, and Cel este flees to N ew York where she finds steady employment as a jazz pianist. She finds a life-long companion with a black musician a nd chronic les her experi ences in a diary that she passes on to her son after he grows up. Her son becom es a paint er and once his own s on, Antoine, is grown, reads him the story of Celeste, t he youth’s grand mother. Intrigued, Anto ine heads to the Big Apple in hopes of finding her.
