PANIC B EATS begins with a tota lly n ude woman with welts o n her body, running throu gh a misty for est full of decayed skelet ons. A knight on horseback is chasing he r, and we soon learn that he is Alari c de Marn ac (a w icked cha racter Naschy first created for HORROR RISES F ROM THE TOMB), viciously killi ng her for her unfaithful ways. After the credits role, we are taken to the present whe re a descendent of Mar nac named Paul (Nas chy) is married to t he wealthy Geneviève (Julia Saly) was has some serious heart problems. P aul decides to take her to his ances tral ho me in the cou ntry for some pea ce and quie t, but the superstitious-fil led setting opens a Pandora ’s Box o f terrib le occur rences. We soo n discover that Paul is a real s on-of-a- bitch who plans to s care his wife to death, plann ing to c ontrol her fortune and cont inue his secret a ffair with seduct ive ba d girl Mireille (Silvi a Miró ), who happ ens to be the niece of the tarot ca rd-reading h ousekeepe r, Mabile (Lola G aos). Pau l’s malev olent schem e works, but he sti ll has to worry about an additional money-hungry mistress (th is guy really gets around!), the unforgiving Mabile, as well as new fianceé Mir eille who m ight be hid ing a thin g or two herself. More grisly murde rs follow, and the ghost of Marnac returns from hell to pu nish the most despic able hum an character in the film. PANIC BEATS was als o writ ten by Nasc hy (under his real n ame Jaci nto Molina) who injec ts the film with an old-fashioned spooky house mo tif, beefed up with a modern movie sense of violence and sex uality. The film offers nothing t oo innovativ e storywise, a nd ev en Naschy admits on the disc’s ext ras that it was partly inspired b y GASLIGHT and REBECCA, but he seem s to just toss in a hodgepodge of exploit ation and horror ingr edients, while del ivering a stylish a nd enjoyable effo rt with a num ber of twists and some genuinely c hillin g mom ents. T he ca mera shots and lig hting are both effe ctive, and there's even does a cool set-up (much like wh at Fredd ie Fr ancis did in THE SKULL and THE CREEPING FLESH) wh ere we see the point of vi ew of Marna c thr ough his dark helmet as he stalks his f emale p rey. Gra phical ly, we are exposed to everything fro m a plate of bloody eyeball s, to victims being beat en relentlessly with the various Medieval weapons affixed on the hou se’s walls (for example, someo ne is axed in the sto mach, followed by the soaked e ntrails oozing out!). Naschy’s most fre quen t 1980s leading la dy, Ju lia Saly, is not giv en much to do, but with her offbeat looks, is a nice presence nonetheless. The promine nt female star here is Si lvia Miró who is seen in the buff frequently, and she certainly make s for some w ell-appreciated Euro starle t eye candy. Naschy himself is very good in the film, p utting on connivin g facades, carrying a number o f women on a string ,
