However, h e first chose to train as an archit ect (perhaps out of respect fo r his father, an enginee r). In 1964, hi s Ya Shagay u po Mo skveI Walk Around Moscow received an honorable me ntion at the Cannes Film Festiv al, while in 1975 Afonya received a special a ward at the All Union Festival, a major U.S.S.R. ev ent. Dane liya's biggest hit in the U .S.S.R. , Mimino (19 77), earned t he special prize a t the Moscow In ternation al Fil m Festival and the U.S.S.R . Stat e Prize. In 1991, Daneliya ea rned the Ni ka Award (the Russian equivalen t to an Oscar) for Best Screenplay for Pasport (1990).
