Nancy, a se cretary, intro duces Clyde to her boss, millionaire Andrew B onner, and persuades B onner to sh owcase Clyde's paintings at one of his pr ivat e showings. To Nancy's delight, Clyd e's painting , a depiction of the tragic figure Cassandra for which sh e modeled, wins first prize at the sho wing. The evening is perfect until a n exp ensive bracelet is sto len from a guest, and Clyde later finds it in Nancy's purse. After Clyde confron ts a confused Nancy about th e theft, she relates the fo llowing s tory to explain her behavior As a young girl, Nan cy lives with her housekeeper mothe r in the lavish Willis home and plays with Karen , the W illises' li ttle daughter. Although Karen wants to invit e Nancy to her up coming bi rthday pa rty, Mr s. Willis r efuses to allow the lo wer-class Nan cy to att end. A true friend, Karen p romises to giv e Nancy o ne of t he pins her guests are receiving. When Karen realizes there are n o extra pins, ho wever, she offers Nancy the beautifu l locket she has just received fro m her mother. Nancy's subse quent joy is soon crushed when Mrs. Willis demands that she return the locket. Later, the lock et is discovere d mi ssing, and Nancy is accused of theft. Alth ough Nan cy's mother soon finds the locket in Karen's dress, Mrs. W illi s refu ses to belie ve Nancy and force s her t o co nfess . The adult Nancy then admits to Cly de that this childhood humiliation caused her unconsc ious de sire to steal the bracele t at the party. After a forgiving C lyde returns the bracelet anony mously , he and Nancy continu e their r omance until the next party at the B onners'. Suspecting that the absent Nancy is sp ending the evening in Bonner's arms , Clyde leaves the party to look f or her and sees her exi ting Mrs. Bonner 's bedroom just after two g unshots are fired. Bonner is foun d murdered, and Mrs. Bonner's diamond necklace, s tolen. Although Nancy and Clyde are questioned, v alet Myron Dexter is eventually found guilty and is sentenced to die. Clyde, however, strongly suspects Nanc y, but she angrily maintains her innocence and leaves for Flor ida. Back in his office , Bl air defends Nancy to Clyde but invites him to his ho use that evening. When confront ed, N ancy denies everything and tells Blair that Clyde is merely jealous. The next day, Dexter is e xecu ted, and a guilt-r idden C lyde jum ps from Blair's office window to his death. To avoid scandal, Blair and Nan cy move t o Engla nd, an d after World War II breaks out, Blair volunt eers his medic al serv ices, while Nancy beco mes an ambulance dr iver. Expressing concern over Blair's health, Nancy insis ts that they take a vac ation at Lord and Lady Wyndham's manor hou se. Jus t as they a re leaving, Blair learns that one of Lady Wyndham's valuable je wels has been stolen. Bla ir suspec ts Nancy bu t is unabl e to prove anything until a bomb d estroys their flat and r eveals her cache of stole n jewels. Although confro nted direc tly, Nancy continues to deny any guilt and divorc es Blair a fter he suffers a nervous b reakdown. Bac k in John' s study, Bl air, like Clyde before him, tries to convince John to abandon Nancy, who now uses t he na me Patto n. John, how ever, belie ves Nancy whe n she tell s him that Blair i s still suffering from his breakdown. Moments before the wedding is t o start, Nancy 's future m other-in-l aw, the u nsuspecting M rs. Willi s, giv es her the sa me locket that she once took away, and tells her that it is a pre ciou s family heirloom. The locket causes Nanc y to be overcome with guilt, and she co llapses at the altar in hysterics.
