Different Drumme rs is based on a tr ue sto ry about two unusual boys in Spokane, W ashington in the mi d 1960s. In this more innocent time, when body builder Jack Lalanne ruled the airwaves, the two heroes , a coupl e of elem entary school students, make a bold attempt to t riumph ov er mortality through friendship. Eleven year old David is slowing down and is now w heelchair-bound by muscula r dystrophy, while Lyle ca n't stop speedin g up. Back then, h e was referr ed to as having a co ndition called MDB (Minimal Brain Dysfunction) bu t tod ay h e would be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. Lyle wants more than anything to get Dav id out of his wheelchair and runni ng again, and he conc octs a wild sche me inv olving a science proj ect, some firemen, drummers, the s chool p rincipal, a cop and a hand-walk across the school gymna sium, among other things.
