The human and s ocial com plexit y of the statu s of widow s was not represented ad equately a nd personally until her complex and fine appearanc e in this film. It was most ly Prec eded by clic hes of he roic wom en who hav e sacrif iced for the na tion with ch aracter s to whi ch it was ver y difficult to get attach ed, nor to their personal gr ief. Siege was directed by an unkno wn Italian director o f that perio d. A lthough Gilberto Tofano was brough t as a profess ional director on the wings o f inspiration made by the French New Wave of thos e year s, he man aged to t urn out a very excitin g work which has caught the Israeli warmth and sense o f social siege which surrounds the Isr aeli w idows, includin g the gre at exp ectation s from them and the social stig mas. Tofano wrappe d his leading lady with lots of warmth and gave a place of honor to Almagor's impressive presence in the film. This is without a doubt one of Almagor's best and most accurate performances. The r estraint i n her perfor manc e plus the shooting and ex pressive use of angles by Tofano and his soft Europea n touch which was far off f rom th e aggre ssive local produ ct managed to produ ce a se nse of documenting an authentic tragedy with a tangible personal touch that min imized the national di mens ion.
