A fter his initial work with Uhe r, Grecner made his mark as a proponent of the so-calle d intellectual f ilm, t he antithes is of the sociologicall y, or rather, socially critical film. Grecner's great role mo del was Alan Resnais, a young French filmmaker who sought to introduce Slovakia to the idea of film as a labyrinth in which meanings are created no t by stories, but by complex configurations of dialogue, sho ts, and various layer s of time, thus differentiating film from both literature and theater. In Dragon Returns―the story of a solit ary hero who is needed by villagers living far in t he mountai ns, but who is rejected by them at the same ti me because of his detachment―Grecner bro ught the tra dition of lyri cized pr ose to life through a whole series of for mal aest hetic techniques . Alain Robbe-Grillet immediate ly developed this idea in the film shot in Brati slava The Man Who Li es (Slovak Muz, ktory luze; Fr ench title L'homme q ui ment; 1968), a nd perfected it in Eden a nd After (Eden a potom, 1970).
