The famous write r Bernard travels to a small tow n nearby a lake to spend va cation out o f season in the winter. He check in an old hot el owned by Enrico and his daughter Irma expecting to mee t the maid Tilde, from whom he h ad a crush last time he vis ited the town. Howev er, he dis covers that Tilde has comm itted suic ide and when he meets th e local phot ographer, Bernard learns th at she was preg nant. He becomes obsess ed to find whether sh e rea lly committed suicide and to guess what r eally happened . When Enrico's son Mario and his wife Adriana arrive at the hotel, Bern ard has daydreams ab out the fate of Tilde.
