On a h ot summer afternoon in N ew York, Emma Jones gossips with other nei ghbors in her residential building about th e affai r that Mrs. Anna Maurrant and the milkman Steve Sankey are having. When th e rude and unfriendly Mr. Frank Maurr ant arrive s, the y change the subject. Meanwhi le, their te enage daughter Rose Maurrant i s being sexually pressured by her married boss Mr. Bert Easter. She does however very much like her kind young Jewish neighbor Sam, who has a ser ious crush on her. The n ext mor ning, Frank Maurrant tells his wi fe that he is traveling to Stamford on busine ss. Mrs. Maurrant meets the ge ntle Sankey in her apartment , but out of the b lue Frank comes back ho me. He re alizes his wife is upstairs with Sankey, and r uns upstairs. We hear shots and see the two men st ruggling as San key tries to esc ape through the window. Maurrant runs out wi th a gun. He has killed S ankey and fatally wounded his wife. Maurrant is apprehended and is led away by police. He apologizes to his daughter Rose, who will now have to take car e of her self and h er young brother without either parent. Rose's boss offers once again to set her up in her own apar tment, but she r efuses. Then she sees Sam, and tells him she w ants to leave th e ci ty. Sam pleads with her to let him go with her, but she tells him it will be b etter for the two of them to have a couple of years a part b efore they consider be coming a couple. Ro se walks off down the s treet by herself.
