In 1960 Germany, Army lawyer Major Steve Gar rett is assi gned to de fend four American soldiers charged wi th raping 16 year-old Karin St einhof. She was sw imming in a nearby river when the four of them c ame across her and they wer e soon arrested thereafter. Ma j. Garrett is a nythin g but impre ssed wi th his clien ts but his job is to give them the best defense possible. He tries to ob tain a plea bargain but Kar in's father flatly refuses and the prosecut or, Colon el Jerome Pakenham , is seeking the death penalty. I n order for the death p enalty to be applied , the defense attorney must ha ve the opportunity to thor oughly examine the victim under o ath. He symp athizes wi th Karin and does his best to con vince Karin father to keep her from testifying. When he r efuses, Garrett is left will lit tle choice but to att ack h er on the stand.
