Deserves recognition as an int eresting misunde rstanding of the hal lucination generatio n, 20 January 2007 Author Timothy Farrell from Wor ceste r, MA Wild in the Streets comes from t he same school of fi lm making that spawned o ther a ttempts to connect to the counterculture such as Skidoo and Candy. The difference between th is and the aforementioned films is that Wild in th e Streets is reasonably clever and well-made . It isn't sympat hetic to the count erculture a nd will likely offe nd those with fo nd memories of the tim e. Surprisi ngly, it was a big hit when released and app ealed to the youth whom it ridiculed so much. Un like T he Trip and Psych-Ou t (two other AIP fi lms), its not an accurate representation of the movement at all. How ever it does wor k as social satire. The direction b y Barr y Shear is good and makes innovative use of split screen photography. Plus, he keep s everything moving at a quick p ace. In its funn y moments , the fil m works well. In its att empts at drama, its h elplessly dated and just as funny as t he humorous moments. Chris topher Jones underp lays his role and Shell y Winters overacts. Hal Holbrook offers the best performance and Diane Varsi achieves the right note of grooviness. The scr ipt by Robe rt Tho m has its moments, especially t he en ding (eas ily the most ingenious p art of the film). Wild in the Str eets isn't perfect, but deserv es recogniti on a s an interesting misunderstanding of the halluc ination gen erat ion. Those into this kind of kitsch will enjoy it the mos t.
