A quick glimpse at the cast for this film would ma ke any horro r fan giddy with glee. The actual movie d oesn't live up to those high expectati ons, but it's far from being al l bad. Desi Arnaz J r. (!) plays an aut hor w ho makes a craz y $20,000 bet with his publisher that he could write a great novel in only 24 hours. To do so, the publisher g ives him th e keys to an o ld a bandoned h ouse where he won't be disturbed. Not true. Once he gets th ere he is interrupted by a multit ude of guests in cluding a family which consists of John Carradine, Sheila Keith, Pet er Cushing and V incen t Price . They are g athered there in a tw isted fami ly reun ion to release their brother from the room he's be en imprisoned in for forty years. Even Ch risto pher Lee d rops by as Corrigan, t he man who h as just purchase d the house. So on, they realize that the cag ed brother is loose an d out for revenge. What a great pl otline and w hat a dream cast! This movie shou ld have be en a hell of a lo t bette r. It' s hard t o pin point the exac t problems with the film, but I would venture to say that the lack of l ight ing was a major fault. Sure the house has no electricity b ut I think t hey took t he title of the movie a little too literally . Scenes aft er scenes are barely v isible an d the actors' faces a re undeci pherable. Only the moment s in the main dinning h all are wel l lit. A lso, th e gre at actors a re given very l ittle to do. Cushing gets a few chuckles as the scared bro ther but Price, Lee a nd espe cially Carr adine are somewhat wasted he re. Well, at least Pri ce g ets the best line of the film `Please don't inte rrupt me w hile I am solil oquizi ng.' A nd on the pl us side, the story has enough twi sts and turns throughout t o keep one`s interest and the ending, while a bit of a c op-out, m anages to surprise.
