Haunted by the memory of Wal ter Ho lderlin, a soldie r he ki lled during World War I, French musician Paul Renard (Phillips Holmes) confesses to a priest (Fr ank Sheridan), who g rants him a bsolut ion. Using the addres s on a letter he fo und on t he dea d ma n's b ody, Paul then travels to Germany to find his family. As anti- French sentiment continues to permeate Germany, Dr. Holderlin (Lionel Barrymore) initially refuses to welco me Paul into his home, but changes his mind whe n his son's fiancée Elsa id entifies him as the man who has been leavin g flowers on W alter's grave. Rather than reveal the real connection between them, Paul tells th e Holderlin fam ily he was a frien d of their son, who atten ded the same musical c onserva tory he did. Althoug h the host ile townspeo ple and local go ssips disapprove, the Holderlins befr iend Paul, who finds hims elf falling in love with Elsa (N ancy Carro ll). When she shows Paul her former fiancé's bedroom, he become s distraug ht and tells her the truth. She convinces him not t o confess t o Walter's parents , who have embraced hi m as their second son, and Paul agrees to forego easing his conscience and sta ys w ith his adopted famil y. Dr. Ho lderli n presents Walter's vi olin to Paul, who plays it wh ile Elsa a ccompanies him on th e piano. The film's or iginal title, The M an I Killed , was c hanged to Th e Fifth Commandment to av oid giving wron g impressions in the minds of t he public about the character of the story. It ultimately was r elease d as Broken Lullaby.
