James S tewart plays professor Ro bert Leaf , a typic al college professor ( when speak ing of college professors typical me ans liber al, but this w as 40 years ago and l abels change). Leaf teaches poetry, lives in a housebo at in San Francisco, vocally opposes nuclear power and pr ogress in genera l. He has an origi nal way to make the fam ily stick togeth er - famil y con certs. His daughter call s him squa re. Leaf's 8-year old son Erasmus is played by Billy Mum y (Sam my the Way Out Seal, Lost In Space, Bless T he Beasts Chi ldren, Thr ee Wishes). Leaf hopes t o find artistic genius of some sort in his only son, and nurtures him in music, painting, literature, etc. But Leaf is disappointed, to put i t mil dly, wh en it t urns out Erasmus has a gift for ma th, can out-think the c olle ges newest computer, instantly compu te horse-race winners. I don' t want to give away too much of the plot, but E rasmus had been writing to Bardot regularly, and after the family comes to d epen d on his ability, his love-si ckness causes a m ental block. Glynis Johns (Father's Delicat e Con diti on, The Cabinet of Caligar i, Mary Poppins) plays Le af's wife. Ed Wy nn (Requiem For A H eavyweight, Mary Poppins) is a neighbor captain narrator. Other cast include Fabian, C indy Carol, John Williams, Jesse White, Jack Kruschen, and James Broli n in an early bi t part. Brigitte Bardot appears at the end.
