The Doll i s an adap tation of the no vel, The Doll (nov el) by Bolesław Prus, which is rega rded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, alo ng with Pharaoh ( novel), m ade Bo lesław Prus a potential candida te for the Nobel Pri ze in lit erature. The influence of Émile Zo la is ev ident, and some have compared the novel t o Madame Bovary by G ustave Flau bert; b oth were Prus's contempora ries. The movie, however, may be mor e compare d to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black). The Doll constit utes a pa norama of life in Warsaw betw een 1878 and 1879, and at t he same time is a subtle story of three gene rations of Polish ide alists, their psychological complications, thei r involvement in the history of t he ninetee nth centur y, social dramas, moral pro blems and the experien ce of tragic existence. At the same time this story describ es the d isintegratio n of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocrat ic eli te spreads the model s of vanity and idlen ess. In the bad air of a backwar d countr y, anti- Semitic ideas are born, val uable ind ividuals mee t ob stacles on their way, and sco undrels are successful. This poetic love story follows a nouvea u riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, throu gh a series of trials and tribulations occasioned b y his obses sive passio n fo r an aristocrati c beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the f amous P olish actress, Bea ta Tysz kiew icz. P lot As a descendant of an impoverished Polish no ble f amily, young Wokulski is force d to work as a waiter at Hopfer' s, a Wa rsaw res taurant, while dreaming of a life in sc ience. After taking part in the failed 18 63 Uprising agains t Tsarist Ru ssia, he is sentenced to exil e in Siberia . On e ventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesma n at Mincel's haberdas hery. Mar rying the late owner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he h ad met while in ex ile. The two merchants g o to Bulgaria durin g the Russo-Turkish War of 1 877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplyin g the Russian Army. The ente rprising Wok ulski now proves a romantic at h eart, falling in lov e with Izabela, daug hter of the vacuous, bankru pt ar istocrat, Tomasz Łęc ki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski b egins frequenting th eatres and a ristocratic salons ; and to he lp her financially distressed father , foun ds a company and sets the ar istocrats up as sh areholders in his business. The indolence of these ar istocrats, who secu re with t heir pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make mon ey is respe cted but h is lack of family and social rank is condes cended to. Because of his help (in secret) to Izab ela's impe cunious bu t influent ial father, the girl becomes a ware of his affection.
