David, now an old ma n, is st ill king o f Israel. Among his sons, the ambitious Adonijah and the clever Solomon. The tw o young men a re fierce rivals, sin ce both are prospective heirs to the throne and only one can be successful. D uring a hunting expedition, Adonij ah challenges his younger brother Solomon to a chariot race . While Sol omon, though brave, s till retain s a modicum of caution, the d aredevil A donijah is eager to win at all c osts -- and loses control of hi s chari ot. Solomon takes the seriously injured Adonijah back to Jerusalem. On the wa y there they m eet the attractive Abishag, who despite her yo uth is ver sed i n the use of healing herbs. She actually succeeds in helpi ng the prince. Adoni jah falls i n love with Abish ag -- but B athsheba arranges thing s so that she works for Dav id, hoping that her you th, her beauty an d her healing powers w ill soothe the ol d king's su ffering. Several members of the influential priesthoo d and al so the respected army g eneral Joa b, who served D avid loyally for many years, support Adonijah's claim to the thr one-- even th ough David has still n ot made any decision with regard t o a po tential succes sor. The battle -experienced Joab regar ds Solomon a s an inde cisive weakling, under whose le adership the kingdo m would soon f all apart. When the pro phet Nathan finds out about Adonijah's conspiracy he in forms Bathsheba and Solomon, who urge David to take imm ediate action. And so it comes to pas s that prepar ations to anoint t he future king of I srael are made both at the Spring of Enrogel, where Adonijah and h is men are encamped, as well as in Jerusalem. The festive procession for Adonijah has already been assembled and the people enticed with delicious delicacies to cheer him on, when the news of Sol omon's c oronation reaches Enrogel. The people promptl y acknowledge the will of King David and stream off to J erusalem in their hordes to greet Solomon, t heir future ruler. A donijah rema ins beh ind with a handful of loyal followers. He r ealizes that he h as lost -- f or the time being. Humbly he places his life in h is bro ther's hand s. Adonijah is f orgiv en on one condition tha t he always remains loyal to his brother Solomon. Th e grea t King David is dead, and his son Solomon has s ucce eded h im as the rightful ruler o f Israel. Adonijah now has a request to mak e of Bathshe ba h e wants to marry Abishag. Solomo n he ars abo ut this seemingly innocent wish, and recognizes it as a renewed ploy on behalf of his br other to re claim the throne -- Adonijah's marriage to the last woman to shar e King Dav id's bed would strengthen h is political posi tion considerably. Solo mon knows that he has to act quickly and decisively if he is t o secu re his own power. He has hi s br other Ad onijah and the latter's close st asso ciate Joab e xecuted. After this ra dical de cision, Solomon withdraws t o present sa crifice s. In a dre am the Lord appear s to him and grants him the fulfillment of a wis h, whatever it ma y be. Solomon merely asks for wisdom -- in order to become a good rule r and judge. War with Egypt is looming. To arm his k ingdom against the territo rial ambitions of its powerful neighbors, Solomon not only in troduces several re forms but also deci des to marry the daughter of the phara oh. The Egypti an princess does not rem ain Solomon's only w ife, h owever as time goes by th e king marries numerous noble women from many different cou ntries for political and economic reason s. In this wa y he preser ves peace for his people, and create s gr eat prosper ity. By al lowing the women to continue practici ng their domestic custom s and re ligious rituals in Jerusalem as well, he comes into regular conflict with the priesthood, who s ee the foreign religions as en dangering Is rael's s ole cove nant with the Lord. T he wisdom grant ed to Solomon by God becomes fully e vident when the ki ng sits in judgment . One day two harlots each claim to be mother of the same bab y. Solomon' s decision seem s utte rly cruel he says that the child should be cut in tw o so that each woman rec eives ha lf. Solomon can now determ ine wh o the rea l mother is from her rea ction she will not a llow her child to be harmed. Sol omon h ands the child b ack to i ts true moth er amid cheers of approval. One of t he most important tasks handed down to Solom on by his father David is building the great Templ e to house the Ark of the Covenant. It has to be larg er and m ore m agnificent than all other temples in the world, and Solomo n now sets abou t fulfilling his father's wi sh. He places Jeroboam in charge of the Israelite wo rkers as chief overseer. Seve n years later, the work is complete d. Th e expensive construction materials have b een brought from far-off land s, and th e people of Israel have paid exceedin gly high taxes without complaint in order to finance the constr uction work . The A rk o f the Covena nt can now finally be taken to t he Temple in a triumphant procession . After so many years of wandering, the Israelites ' most sacred possession now has a fixed home of its own. People s tream t o Jerusalem from across the entir e co untry to celebrate the great day. Abish ag, now married, comes too and brings her family. Solomo n has decid ed to mingle among the people in disguise, and he and Abishag are overjoyed when they accide ntally meet again after so man y years. The Tem ple makes Jerusalem a nd its king famous throughout the wor ld. Even the dark-skinned Queen of Sheba sets off with a large r etinu e to visit t he wise and cultivated Solomo n and admire his magnificen t cit y. The admiration turns out to be mutual Solomon, capt ivated by her beauty, fa lls deeply in love with her . The two o f them have a child, Menelik, but one day the Queen of She ba decides to leave. She does not want Menelik to be deprived of the regal dignity awaiting him in his home country. Solomo n stays behind, with a heavy heart. The king h as now achieved ev erything he set his heart o n, but wit h the passi ng o f the year s th e wise Solomon grad ually becomes a mela ncholy, skep tical old man who reg ularl y que stions his very exi stence. Mate rial things seem to represent the o nly reality for him . He also refus es to adopt an y kind of stead y policy, especially in religious matte rs. With hi s foreign w ives, Solom on sa crifices to foreign gods, a nd this i ncurs the wrath of the pri esthood. The loy al Jeroboam appeals to his king's conscience, b ut to no avail. Durin g one of Solomon's sorties i n disg uise among his peo ple, a simple farmer r eminds him of the first of the Ten Com mandments revealed by the Lord to Moses You shall have no other gods before me. At anoth er decisive moment, God Hi mself sp eaks to Solomon and anno unces the punishment for his sinfuln ess the kingdo m wil l collapse a fter Solo mon's deat h. The ki ng has grown old and w eary. He has lost touc h with the peop le of Israel, w ho a re s uffering from heavy taxati on and forced labor. S olomon has treated his long-standin g compan ion Jeroboam, to whom he entrusted t he adminis tration of the nort hern tribes, with murderous anger ever since a prophet predicted the division of the kingdom to him. The king no longer has the stre ngth to change things -- he just le aves them as they are. The consequences of this bec ome clear shortly after his death. Solomon's son and succes sor Rehoboam treats the country' s leaders w ith arrogance, and provo kes the division of the kingdom into two parts the onl y tr ibe stil l loyal to him is that of Judah, while all the others unite under Jeroboa m. The pro phecy has been fulf ille d. The kin gdom that Solomon received from his father David, and invested with such might and magnif icence, is now div ided
