This documentary by her husband, Elem Klimov, in cludes excerpts from all of Shepitko's film s, and her own voice is heard t alking about her life and art. Elem Klimov' s grief-stricken elegy Larisa exami nes the life of his la te wife—the film director L arisa Shepitko—through a series of direct-a ddress int erviews and photomontages, set against a mournful visual-musical backdrop. Typically, Klimov films his subje cts ( which i nclude himself and severa l of Shepitko's co llab orators) within a stark, snow-cov ered fo rest, its tangled we b of trees standing in as metaphorical rep resentati on of a pe rhaps inexpressible suffering, the result of Shepitko's premature death while filming her adaptation of Valentin Rasputin's novella F arewell t o Matyora. Interw eaving home movi e footage with seq uences from Shepitko's work ( Maya Bulgakova's pensive plane crash reminis cence f rom Wings takes on s everal new l ayers o f resonance in this context), L arisa's most powerful pa ssage is its fi rst accompan ied by the g randiose final mus ic cu e from Shepitko's You and I, Klimov dissolves between a seri es of personal ph otographs that encompass Larisa's e ntire life, from birth to death. T his brief symphony of sorrow anticipate s the cathartic reverse-motion climax o f Klimov's Come and See, though by placing the scene first within Lari sa's ch ronology, Kl imov se ems to be w orking aga inst catha rsis. The pain is clearly fresh, the wound still festering, and Klimov wants—abov e all—to ca pture how deep misery's knife has cut.
