In this very late 60's irreverent, alm ost anarchic low-budget film, Brian De Palma defines more of his strange, given Hitchc ock-like fascination of v oyeuris m, and attacks th e issue s of the day. The most promi nent of which, both cringe -induci ng and just plain funny, is when he focuses on the black-power movement (a black w oman handing out fliers asking white p eople 'do you know what it's l ike to be bl ack'), which is somethin g that could only work for that time and place, not before or now. But one of the key t hings to the inter est in the film is 27 year old Robert De Niro (not his fi rst or last film with the director), who pl ays this character who sits in a room looking out through his telescope at women in thei r roo ms, s etting up phony deals, and in the end basically thro wing bo mbs. Those who have said that De Niro can't act and just is hi mself in every movie should see t his movie, if only out of some minor cur iosity. A couple o f times in the f ilm it's actual ly not funny, as when there's a disturbance in a black-power me eting (filmed in a grainer, rougher style t han the rest of the film). In the end i t's capped off with a rambling monologue in an interview tha t to ps De N iro's in K ing of C omedy . It's pret ty obvious where De Palma's career woul d go after t his, into slig htly more mainstream Ho llywood te rritory, but all of his tra demarks are here; the dark, almost nail- biting comedy, the perfect ly timed style of vo yeuri sm, and interes ting usage of loca ls. Think if De Palma and De Niro did a Mon ty Python fi lm, only e ven more low-budget and in its Ne w York way just as off-the-hinges, and you got Hi, Mom!
