This early 70's giall o by Umberto Le nzi is certainly a mong the best in his filmogr aphy a nd also in the whole genre . Personally I think Lenzi's best films are the funny cartoon-turned-f ilm Krimin al, the styl ish g iallo Seven Blood-Stained Orchids, the explosive Napoli violenta and th is. In the eighties he did plenty of fil m trash in form of Eaten A live, Hitcher in the Dark or Bla ck Demons, al l of which are ripping something off an dor very du ll and slow movi ng. Knife of Ice came when the giallo boom was at i ts hotte st and the result is convincing. Technically the fil m is superb, containing g reat cinematography in the beginning whe n we le arn about the main character's traum a towards trains. From this point on, Lenzi shows us his a bility to benefit the widescree n and, for example, the bicycle r ide near the forest is genuinely beautiful! This sc ene also shows Lenzi's abi lity to bui ld suspense , very slowl y but meaningfully. After al l, there a ren't so many murd ers in th e whole f ilm, only the suspens e circ ulat ing around the mur derer's identity. One suspec t is a devil worshipp er which brings new aspects to the mystery . Since the final scene t akes place in a church, on e can won der if Lenzi wanted to c omment on something, maybe th e hypocritic al morale of church and superstition. T he main character (Carrol Ba ker) is mute which demands a lot from her face a nd eyes. The actress wor ks very well , giving us a belie vabl e performance circulating a roun d the emot ions of fear an d mental pain . The other actors are good, too. The finally, howe ver, may not give too posi tive a sight about female sex since they all ar e expressed r ather negati vely in th e film, one way or an other. St ill this is easily among the most noteworthy in the genre, not as bloody as the Argento f ilms, fo r example, but equal ly suspenseful and visually a lso interesting.
