由加籍印裔女导演迪帕 ．梅塔执导，曾获芝加哥国 际影展奖。因内容表现在打破传统的 “性禁锢 方面，所以公映时 竟触发狂潮，成为众 矢之的，导演本人亦遭受恐吓。 剧情介绍 新德里一个年轻美貌姑 娘嫁入中产店主家庭后，因丈夫沉缅于香港功夫，并迷恋于中国艳女而受到冷落。而不育 的大嫂亦因丈夫参与 “灵 修倍感寂寞，两人 同病相怜遂成闺中好友，并发展成床 上鸳鸯。后来东窗事 发，迫使两人离家出走。该 片在印度来讲，内容较为 惹火，但比起香港片，似 乎仍显平谈，而且 剧情颇为噱头，算不上佳作。不过对女性情欲描写极 为细致，有一定的文艺 剧情趣味。该片还入选香港 “印 度多面睇十大印度影片。 A shok (Kul bhushan Kh arba nda) runs a family bu siness that sells takeout food and wh ich als o has a vide o rental store at the side. Ashok's e xtended family incl udes his wife Radha (Shabana Azmi), his b rothe r Jatin (Javed Jaffrey), t heir ailin g mother Biji (Kushal Rekhi) and their ma nservant Mundu (Ranjit Chowdhr y), all living under the same roof. Jatin, at the insist ence of Ashok and the ir moth er, Biji, agr ees t o marry the beautiful Si ta (Nandita Das) in an arranged marr iage, al though he is actually in love with Julie (Alice Poon), a Chinese- India n. At first glanc e, you see a happy middle-class famil y going through the normal paces of everyday life. However, a s the layers are slowly pee led back, we f ind a s immeri ng cauldron of discontent wi thin the family, with al most every family m ember living a l ie. Both marriages in t he family turn out to be emotionally empty, without love or passi on. While As hok is an ascetic who has taken a vow of celib acy, Jatin is a handsome ladies' man who is stil l openly seeing Jul ie e ven after his marri age t o Sita. Ash ok has pledged his total devotion to a religious holy man, a swami, in order to purge his li fe of worldly desires and temptatio ns. Radha, bound by her sense of duty to her husband, agrees to go along with h is wishes. As you can ima gine, with both husbands ignoring their spouses' e motional and se xual ne eds (albeit with reasons that are totally opposite from eac h other), i t is only a matter of time before Radha and Sit a look to one anothe r for comfor t and to satisfy their o wn pass ions. In this en vironment, it is on ly natural that Si ta and Rad ha become f ast friends, and , in time, much more than t hat. But their love is not without i ts share of pai nful ob stacles.
